BANK HOLDS OFF UK RATE RISE FOR ANOTHER MONTH

The Bank of England Monetary Policy Committee decided to freeze interest rates for another month today.

The most recent change in interest rates was an increase of 0.25 percentage points to 4.75% on 5th August 2004.

At the start of this month, experts said homeowners should expect a further rate rise after new data showed house prices marching forward and the strongest mortgage demand since the summer, but recent figures showing weak sales on the High Street may have stayed the MPC's hand.

Last month, the committee indicated that an increase in rates "might be warranted in due course" if the economy follows the Bank of England's projected path.

Some analysts yesterday were still predicting a rise, but maybe not until May.
